Welcome to ~H~bTutorialWriter~N - the ~HProfessional Educator's Toolkit for Computer
Assisted Instruction~N. This program was written to allow you, the ~G~IEducator~N,
to make full use of the computer as a medium of instruction, without having
to learn ~M~IBasic~N or ~M~IPascal~N or some other computer language. ~H~bTutorialWriter~N
is an ~HAuthoring System~N. This means that the things you might want to do to
make your ~C~IComputer Based Training~N interesting, attention-getting and - above
all - effective, have been pre-programmed. So if you want to put your text on
screen in ~M~Idifferent colors~N, or ~Hpop a question window on the screen~N, or set
a ~G~IQuiz~N, or ~R~Ishow a graphic~N, all you have to do is to put a simple code into
your text.

~H~bTutorialWriter~N's simple codes stand between you and the computer, translating
the things you want to do into computer code which will make the computer
respond. You are then free to concentrate on the thing you do best - ~Hteaching
others~N. You design your ~M~ITutorial~N, deciding what you want to say and how you
want to display it, what questions to ask and when to ask them, what to do
if the answer is given correctly and what to do if the answer is wrong, and
~H~bTutorialWriter~N's codes will convert the computer into a helpful assistant,
instead of a perplexing and frustrating piece of equipment to be beaten into
submission.

Let me give you an example of how easy it is. Suppose you want to put a
title on the screen, like the one on this screen. Instead of having to write
lines and lines of computer code, all you have to do is type ~C~I#T~N and follow it
with the title you want. The ~C~I#~N sign has to be in the first column of a row
so you would type it like this

With ~H~bTutorialWriter~N you can create lessons which give the impression that
you are dealing with your audience eyeball to eyeball. Important facts
can be emphasised using ~R~Icolors~N and sounds, in addition to text graphics.
There are codes for ~B~Iasking questions and commenting on the answer~N, and other
codes for ~Z~cbranching to remedial information if the answer is wrong~N. There
are ~HHYPERTEXT~N |Buttons| with which you can provide extra information to those
who need it, without boring those who don't. And of course there are ~G~IQuizzes~N
and ~G~ITests~N which can be liberally sprinkled to make sure the points are
getting home. If you need it, you can add a ~C~IHELP~N system to your ~M~ITutorial~N
and create a ~C~IMenu~N to divide your ~M~ITutorial~N up into chapters.

But ~H~bTutorialWriter~N is not just a fancy screen presentation program, although
you will have to admit that scrolling text off the screen and making screens
slide into place, in addition to highlighting with flashing colors and sounds
and 'breaking into' the lesson with pop-up windows, do make it easy to draw
attention to the things you want to emphasize.
To help you in your teaching task, there are some graphics you might want to
use. Since ~H~bTutorialWriter~N is a textbased program, the built-in graphics
are also textbased. But they still provide a little break from reading a
text screen.

~H~bTutorialWriter~N has another text graphics feature. Included with the program
is a stand-alone ~C~IMemory Resident Utility~N called ~G~ITWSNAP.COM~N. When you type
~G~ITWSNAP~N this program loads into memory. Now you can take a snapshot of any
~C~ITEXT~N screen by holding down the ~HALT~N key and pressing ~HS~N. The first snapshot
will be stored in the current directory as ~G~ITWSNAP.000~N, the next as ~G~ITWSNAP.001~N
etc. When you have finished taking snapshots, type ~G~ITWSNAP~N again and the
program will remove itself from memory.
~H~bTutorialWriter~N has a ~C~IUtility~N program which stores the snapshots, ready to
be popped up on the screen inside your ~M~ITutorial~N. Snapshots can be taken of
any textbased application, or you can draw screens with a text screen editor.

Then you can position ~HHYPERTEXT Buttons~N on the drawing to explain parts of
it, or whatever. ~G~INescatunga Software~N produces an excellent text screen
editor called ~HBOX~N. A ~HSHAREWARE~N version has been included with ~H~bTutorialWriter~N
with the permission of ~G~INescatunga Software~N.
A final graphics feature of ~H~bTutorialWriter~N is a code which lets you run
your own true Graphics programs. If you have a program which displays
~HPCX~N pictures, for example, then you can include them in your ~M~ITutorial~N by
using a special code to temporarily exit from the ~M~ITutorial~N, run the Graphics
program, then return to your ~M~ITutorial~N at the point where you left.
I'll demonstrate it with an executable Graphics program.

Welcome back to the ~HDEMO~N. Oh, if no graphic screen was shown, it is
because you don't have enough memory available. The 'shell-out' code tries
to run the graphics program in the memory that ~G~ITWRITER~N is not using.
But ~G~ITWRITER~N contains the full ~HIntegrated Development Environment~N and needs
almost ~H250K~N of memory. The program you will be distributing to your students
along with your ~M~ITutorial~N is ~G~ITWTEACH~N, the ~HDisplay Module~N, which only needs
~H100K~N of memory for itself. You can test this out later. Make a note to rerun
this ~HDEMO~N later by typing ~HTWTEACH DEMO~N from the DOS prompt.
Now let's look at how ~H~bTutorialWriter~N handles student testing.

~H~bTutorialWriter~N has three systems for testing how well the students are
absorbing the subject matter.
1. ~HQUICK QUESTIONS~N. A question is posed and the student is asked to type
in an answer. The student is then advised if the
answer is correct or wrong and the correct answer is
displayed. The ~HQuick Question~N has two formats.
2. ~HQUIZZES and TESTS~N. ~H~bTutorialWriter~N has ~C~IUtility~N programs for the creation
of ~G~IQuizzes~N and ~G~ITests~N. A ~G~IQuiz~N can have up to ~Hten
Question and Answer pairs~N. A ~G~ITest~N can have up to
~Hten Multiple-Choice Questions~N, each with up to ~Hsix
answers~N.
3. ~HBRANCHING TEST~N. This is a ~HMultiple-Choice Question~N with up to ~Hsix
answers~N. The program branches to another part of the
file depending on the answer. The ~M~ITutorial~N continues
when the student selects the correct answer.
